My Baby

A cradle left in an empty room
The moonlight whispering through
Torn curtains in musty gloom.

Silver flashes on dated wallpaper
Dirty carpeting and broken toys
A wailful cry hangs like vapor.

No one's bothered to stop and see
If baby's hungry, baby's happy
He lies in the dark, a life's debris

A burden on no one, those long gone
In search of new fulfillment
On a life overdrawn.
